In Britain why do boilers tend to break down more often in the winter?

Maybe because many people don't get them serviced. I agree that in the winter boilers have to work harder. I live in rural Scotland (last nights temperature was minus 14) and our boiler has never broken down because we have it serviced every year about Sept. time.
